A good patent filing and defence strategy can set one start-up company apart from their competitors. The same investors tend to go around looking considering the same few competing start-ups. While many start-ups file patents to attract the attention of these investors, few are aware of the need to show investors that they have a good defence strategy in the event their proposed product infringes a patent somewhere.

The workshop will briefly touch on the different types of intellectual property, such as copyright, trademarks, designs and so on. This will set the background for the audience to grasp the specific purpose and uses of patent and trademark rights. The core of this talk will cover the requirements for patent protection, patentability, and on their use. Many start-up companies will encounter patent rights eventually, either to protect their own patent rights, or to avoid infringing the patent rights of others or even to purchase or licence patent rights.
